Vote NO to Proceed Health Care Repeal Bills: Easterseals Letter to the Senate

July 24, 2017

Dear Senator:

Please VOTE AGAINST moving to health care legislation that waives important health protections and cuts and caps community care and services for people with disabilities.

Easterseals is a leading nonprofit organization that helps individuals with disabilities maintain their health and live independently through Medicaid-funded supports, such as attendant care, adult day and home health services. The Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA) and the Obamacare Repeal Reconciliation Act (ORRA) would jeopardize, not improve, access to these critical services for millions of children and adults with disabilities and must be defeated.

Easterseals opposes BCRA and ORRA for their more than $700 billion in cuts to Medicaid services, their elimination of $19 billion in direct home and community-based services for people with disabilities, and their repeal or waiver provisions of essential health benefits and preexisting condition and other nondiscrimination protections.

Individuals with disabilities already struggle to access community supports. Many are on long waiting lists for Medicaid waiver home and community-based services. Others have seen their services cut or restricted. Cutting Medicaid resources to states through a restrictive federal cap could further restrict access to or force states to eliminate waiver services all together. The end result will be more isolation, less well-being and more dependence.

Please don’t repeal, cut or cap health protections or services for people with disabilities. Vote NO on the motion to proceed to the Better Care Reconciliation Act and the Obamacare Repeal Reconciliation Act. Thank you for your consideration of Easterseals’ position.

Sincerely,

Katy Beh Neas Executive Vice President, Public Affairs
