Miami, FL – Easterseals South Florida is proud to share the inspiring journey of Leandro, a 17-year old Culinary Arts student whose resilience and determination have paved the way for a brighter future

Leandro arrived from Cuba in the summer of 2022 and soon joined the Easterseals Academy, where he began his education in the Culinary Arts program. Despite facing significant challenges, including a brain tumor that has affected his cognitive development, Leandro has shown remarkable perseverance in overcoming obstacles

Upon arrival, Leandro and his family were struggling. His father, the family's primary provider, had been injured in an accident, leaving the household in financial distress. Without access to adequate state scholarships, Leandro's education was at risk. However, he remained determined to learn English and acquire the skills needed to support his family. He and his parents tirelessly advocated for a scholarship to attend Easterseals South Florida, but he ended up receiving two over a short period.

Over the past two years, Leandro has flourished at Easterseals South Florida Culinary Arts program. His passion for learning and unwavering work ethic have made him an invaluable member of the school community. One of his biggest milestones came when he was selected to participate in the prestigious Festival of Chefs signature event three consecutive times – a testament to his dedication and culinary talent.

The Idea Center Pitch Competition

Recently, the Miami Culinary Institute and The Idea Center at Miami Dade College launched an initiative to empower minorities by providing them with the opportunity to start their own food and beverage businesses. Leandro enthusiastically embraced this opportunity and enrolled in a 12-week training and coaching program, where participants developed business ideas and pitched them for a chance to receive funding.

Leandro's hard work and determination paid off-he was awarded a $7,000 prize to launch his very own coffee cart enterprise. This victory marks a significant step toward his dream of financial independence and providing for his family. After using his prize to design and build Leo's Coffee Cart and purchase supplies, he’s now ready to launch this exciting entrepreneurial business.

Easterseals South Florida is incredibly proud of Leandro's accomplishments and remains committed to supporting students like him on their journey to success. His story is a shining example of resilience, determination, and the power of community support.
