Forging New Beginnings at Camp Stand By Me

When Jeeon, a non-verbal child, and his family arrived at Easterseals Washington’s Camp Stand By Me, his parents weren’t sure how he would adjust to this new experience.

Camp Stand By Me offers not only an exciting summer adventure, but also an opportunity for personal empowerment. For Jeeon, it was a chance to build confidence and prepare for the upcoming challenges of entering eighth grade. For his parents, it was a lesson in the value of fostering independence and allowing him to explore the world on his own terms. They came to understand that sometimes stepping back, even when it’s difficult, can help everyone grow stronger.

Jeeon's parents had always been deeply focused on meeting his needs, often at the expense of taking time for themselves. Sending Jeeon to camp was a difficult decision, one that required them to trust that he would be well cared for and supported in this new setting. They had never been apart from him for such an extended period, and the thought of him being away for five days brought up a mix of emotions. His parents described the emotional weight of letting go, even for just five days. “We missed him so much,” they shared. “His absence highlighted just how much he fills our days with his unique light and love.” Yet, during this break, they realized that this temporary separation would offer them a much-needed respite — an opportunity to take a step back, recharge, and care for themselves.

For Jeeon, the experience of Camp Stand By Me was equally transformative. Surrounded by a dedicated team of counselors and fellow campers, he was able to explore his own independence in a safe and nurturing environment. Camp activities such as archery, swimming, fishing, and art projects helped to challenge him, build his confidence, and provide him with opportunities to discover new strengths within himself.

As Jeeon enters eighth grade, his parents now feel more confident in his ability to navigate the world. They are grateful for the lessons learned during his time at Camp Stand By Me and are excited to continue supporting him as he builds the skills and confidence he needs to thrive. “Thank you to his counselors and support team at camp who helped make this possible, and to those who continue to support our journey” they expressed.
