Selene’s Transformative Impact at Jane’s House

Selene holding a young girl

Selene’s daily routine is filled with the sounds of laughter, cooing, and the joyful chaos that comes with caring for young children. Whether holding, comforting, feeding, or playing, her work is fueled by a passion for empowering each child to reach their full potential.

Selene began volunteering daily in the infant room at Easterseals Jane’s House Child Development Center in May 2023. Her dedication has since made a profound impact, creating a welcoming and nurturing space for children of all abilities, even playing a key role in helping one child with disabilities make significant strides in his development and learning.

Selene’s path to Easterseals Washington was a culmination of years of experience and a clear sense of purpose. “I had known for many years that my calling was to work with babies,” she shares. She has volunteered at several childcare centers and at her church for over a decade, but it was when she met Tomi, the Program Director at Easterseals Jane's House, that she knew she had found the right place. “Tomi is a really nice and caring person who strives to include everyone,” Selene shares. It was this welcoming and inclusive environment that inspired her to volunteer, allowing her to contribute her skills and energy in a place where every child is valued, regardless of their abilities.

Her dedication goes beyond routine tasks; she has become an integral part of one child’s transition into the toddler room. “I care for a toddler who is partially blind, non-verbal, and physically limited but still manages to communicate in his own way,” Selene shares. “He shows his love for me with his body language, his smiles, babbling, and tongue clicking.” Selene provides one-on-one care, ensuring that he receives the stability and attention needed during this pivitol transition.

"I am thankful for Easterseals Jane's House because they give me the opportunity to be a part of the wonderful services they provide for children in Yakima," she reflects. The inclusive and accepting atmosphere created by Tomi, and the entire team, ensures that everyone—whether a volunteer, staff member, a child, or a parent—feels welcome and valued.

The impact of volunteering at Easterseals Washington extends far beyond those receiving care—it profoundly shapes the volunteers, too. Selene’s work at Easterseals Jane’s House embodies the heart of our mission. Through her deep compassion, generosity, and unwavering dedication, Selene is helping to create limitless opportunities for children of all abilities, making a lasting difference in the lives of the individuals and families we serve.
