We are thrilled to report that over 11,000 Ages & Stages Questionnaires® (ASQs) were completed in 2014, across all Easter Seals affiliates. While these are very exciting numbers, we still have work to do to help spread the word about this FREE developmental milestone screening tool.
If you are a parent, make sure your child reaches his or her developmental milestones. It’s easy to find out, go to MaketheFirstFiveCount.org to take Easter Seals' free online screening tool. Simply by answering age-specific questions via the Ages & Stages Questionnaires® (ASQ) —a free screening tool available through generous support of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust — you can see if your child’s developmental progress is on schedule. It takes less than 20 minutes to make sure your child reaches his or her developmental milestones.
Already, in 2015, Easter Seals Washington has completed 150 ASQ's on behalf of children at our Child Development Centers. Through these ASQs, we have been able to identify 11 children as having potential delays, 15 as needing additional monitoring and 5 of those children are already receiving services through Easter Seals Washington. Identifying these delays is critical in ensuring that we are providing these children with the support they need to be school-ready in order to build a foundation for a lifetime of learning.
In late 2014, we also launched our Mobile Technology Lab program to serve children that the ASQ identified as needing extra education and small group intervention. We look forward to continuing to report these numbers throughout the year and share stories about how this tool and the Make the First Five Count Campaign are making a positive impact in the lives of children and their families in Washington state.
Stories that Count
Easter Seals Washington Jane’s House Child Development Center, Yakima, WA
We have a family with a little girl that has spina bifida who is enrolled in our Toddler 1 classroom. She started with Easter Seals a few months ago and is doing wonderful. She was barely moving around when she started at our child development center. Now, she is scooting quite fast all over the center, exploring the classroom, and making a number of friends along the way. She is excited about her new independence and has a smile that lights up the entire classroom. Mom has let us know that, soon they are going to be introducing braces for her legs to help her begin learning to walk. We are very excited for this and to help her in the classroom with this process.

One of the children in the preschool classroom at Easter Seals Washington Growing Years Child Development center had completely stopped communicating with her teachers at school. Not only did she refuse to speak with the teachers, she was very rarely communicating with her peers as well. After completing the ASQ and started her in our Mobile Technology Lab, she has already made progress. A few sessions with the MLT instructor, she has gradually started speaking again and seems to be making steady progress in her daily communications with both teachers and peers. She also seems to be gaining new found social confidence. She will continue in MTL to help strengthen communication skills and build confidence. We look forward to continuing to report her progress.

One of our parents recently shared with us, that they really enjoyed completing the ASQ with their child because it helped them know what their child should be able to do at this stage. They wouldn't have known otherwise.
