Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania (ESWCPA) is celebrating National Speech-Language-Hearing Month throughout May by raising awareness to the signs and symptoms of speech and language delays and hearing loss. This yearly focus is sponsored by American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Early Intervention to speech and language delays is key, however, many parents who have concerns are told to ‘wait and see’ if their child’s difficulties resolve on their own—often by well-meaning friends, family members, and sometimes even professionals. Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania’s speech pathologist Annette Shearman explains, “A child’s ability to communicate effectively is critical to their learning, future reading and writing success, academic performance, social interactions, and even their behavior.” Common warning signs of speech or language delays in young children include:

  • Cannot say “mamma” or “dada” by age 1
  • Cannot say the names of a few toys and people by age 2
  • Cannot repeat common rhymes by age 3
  • Is not talking in short sentences by age 4
  • Is not understood by people outside the family by age 5

Sophia was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech at 4 years old. She started speech therapy at ESWCPA. Shortly after, Sophia’s little sister Jessa had the same symptoms and was diagnosed. “This diagnosis is not for the faint of heart,” explained their mother. Nearly six years later, both Sophia and Jessa are thriving in speech therapy. “When we started at Easterseals, Sophia was about 4 years old with approximately 3-5 words in her vocabulary. Today, Sophia is in 5th grade and most people can understand about 80% of her speech!”

Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania also provides hearing testing and hearing aids for the community. Most major health insurances are accepted as hearing loss is exceedingly and increasingly common as people age. Among adults ages 35–64, roughly 9% have permanent hearing loss in both ears. That number rises to 35% for people ages 65–74, and 73% for adults 75 and older. (Note that these figures do not include people with mild hearing loss or people with hearing loss in one ear.)

“We know that treatment for hearing loss has the potential to transform a person’s life,” said Dr. Sydney Black, Audiologist at Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania. “Most people have no idea how much they were missing until they get hearing aids.” Warning signs of hearing loss in adults include:

  • Hearing ringing, roaring, or beeping in one or both ears.
  • Not responding to spoken words
  • Having persistent ear discomfort after exposure to loud noise
  • Having muffled hearing
  • Experiencing constant frustration trying to hear speech and other sounds
  • Avoiding conversation
  • Experiencing social isolation
  • Experiencing depression

Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania’s audiology office, located at 232 Walnut Street Johnstown, works with all patients to diagnose, and help resolve hearing loss. While testing for hearing loss is normally covered by major health insurance, the cost of hearing aids is not always covered. Grant funding, when available, helps low-income patients receive hearing aids and office support. Funding from Lee Initiatives Health and Wellness Endowment, 1889 Foundation, and Community Foundation for the Alleghenies including Hooversville Trinity ELCA Charitable Legacy Fund, DeMario Fund for Children, Elmer and Barbara Laslo Fund, Penelec Fund for the Greater Johnstown, and the Fund for the Future of Community Foundation for the Alleghenies have made hearing aids possible for the local community.
