Silver Spring, MD — Easterseals DC MD VA has received a generous grant from the Bob Woodruff Foundation to enhance mental health services for military-connected children served by the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic (Cohen Clinic) at Easterseals.

The funding will credential more clinicians in evidenced-based therapies for military children. These techniques help reduce a child’s anxiety, depression, PTSD, or overwhelming behavioral challenges. Military children face unique challenges related to frequent relocations, deployments, a combat-injured parent, and, in some cases, the death of a parent. With more credentialed clinicians, the Cohen Clinic can work with more children who have heightened emotions related to these military stressors.

The grant will also fund therapeutic supplies and activities, including toys for the clinic’s playroom, where children meet with their therapist in a safe, age-appropriate space. After sessions, children can take home a bag with simple activities and tools to help them calm themselves and feel more in control when they’re upset or overwhelmed. The clinic also regularly hosts respite events, providing activities that promote family togetherness. One of the most popular events is their family game night.

In addition to serving DC, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, the Cohen Clinic anticipates serving 10%-20% more military children given its recent expansion into Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals is well on its way to reaching more military families, backed by the Bob Woodruff Foundation and donors.
