Cassidy was born 3 ½ months premature and only weighed 1 pound, 5 ounces. The doctors and her family were not sure what Cassidy’s future would be like. She is legally blind and was originally incorrectly diagnosed as having developmental disabilities. Her family was told that she would have to work very hard in order to be at the same level as other children her age and she was placed in special education classes. In her heart she knew that she was incorrectly diagnosed and she worked hard to get additional evaluations to get a correct diagnosis. She turned to Easterseals where she was correctly diagnosed as having a behavioral health disability as well as an autism spectrum disorder. This meant that she was now going to be able to receive the proper treatments that she went years without. With these new treatments her future opened up and she was able to start accomplishing her dreams. For starters her achievement scores were so high that she no longer needed special education.
Today Cassidy is 19 years old. She has made huge strides in her treatment and devoted her life to being a voice for others. Last year she reached a major milestone by graduating high school and enrolling at Macomb Community College. She also started her own YouTube channel and is a very big advocate in her community, speaking up for people with disabilities, especially individuals who have been misdiagnosed.
