As a concerned Volusia County citizen and Easterseals board member, I respectfully ask for your support of Specific Appropriation 267A, the nonrecurring sum of $100,000 from the General Revenue Fund is provided to Easterseals in Volusia County to provide autism assessment and diagnostic services. Easterseals Northeast Central Florida is distinctive as the region’s leading provider of services and support for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). With support and initiative by Rep. David Hood and other local philanthropists, Easterseals established an Autism Center for Excellence (ACE) in 2008 to strengthen treatment and support programs to families coping with autism and in that time, has assisted over 550 families with ASD treatment and support.
As a result of increased awareness and physician education, client referrals have increased from 2-4 per month, to more than 20 per month. Easterseals is seeking additional funds to assist clients who are referred by their physician to Easterseals’ Early Diagnosis Clinic. The multidisciplinary evaluations used for definitive diagnosis cost nearly $1,750 per child. These critical assessments and related diagnostic tool is excluded from most insurances and Medicaid, making the cost too great for most Easter Seals families and as a result proper ASD diagnosis and intervention can be delayed for months and years.
Today there are 50+ families on the waiting list for diagnostic and functional assessment evaluations. Easterseals is seeking public funding of $100,000 to meet this growing need for local families to receive early diagnosis and treatment.
