Gerardo De La Cerda is one of the many people who recently worked to request a budget increase from Sacramento for the financially neglected developmental disabilities system.
An Adult Day Services participant, Gerardo serves as the Vice President of the Advocacy group at our Pacoima office. Gerardo helps run the group’s monthly meetings, and leads them when the President is not available. He also headed up a letter writing campaign to Governor Brown and the state legislature to ask for additional funding for developmental disabilities services.
“Being at Easter Seals Adult Day Service for five years has made my life better than it would have been,” said Gerardo. “I want to help make sure there is enough money for the service to help other people in the future.”
In addition to working to help ensure services receive proper funding for the future, Gerardo has also developed a vision for his own future. He is aiming to be a Life Skills Coach like those who have helped him develop his math and reading skills and money management during his five years as an Adult Day Service participant.
“My Life Skills Coaches help me learn I’m not alone, to keep going and not give up,” Gerardo added. “I want to help other participants the way my coaches have helped me.”
Volunteering is a big component of our Adult Day Service. Gerardo regularly volunteers at an organization that supplies wheelchairs to people in need throughout the world and at a local thrift shop, sorting inventory and organizing displays.
Gerardo’s family is also excited for his future. “His goal is to be as independent as possible and I know, with the support of Easter Seals, that goal will become a reality,” said Gerardo’s mother Terri De La Cerda. “As a parent of a special needs adult it is more than comforting to know that the services Easter Seals offers, and the supportive staff are there as a lifeline to the future.”
