San Pedro Adult Day Service Team Gain Skills, Learn History as Volunteers on USS Iowa

Since late 2013 participants in the Adult Day Service in San Pedro have been gaining valuable work-related experiences while learning about an important chapter of U.S. history as volunteers on the USS Iowa.

The battleship, built in 1940, was designated the "World's Greatest Naval Ship" due to her big guns, heavy armor and fast speed.  USS Iowa served our country for over 50 years before being turned into a floating museum docked in San Pedro in 2012.

“The idea for our clients is to build job skills,” Program Coordinator Shelia Collins said. “This has been a great opportunity for us to level up.”

Six groups of clients in teams of three each volunteer several days a week. The ESSC volunteers do a variety of tasks including cleaning and learning to sew badges onto crew uniforms.

“There’s no busy work here,” USS Iowa Volunteer Coordinator Sue Schmidt says. “All of the individuals from Easter Seals are part of our crew. And all our crew members are treated the same.  As we get to know each person individually we are determining their skills, talents and interests.  Then we are matching them with a mentor and the appropriate volunteer activity.”

In the future the plan is to expand the volunteer opportunities to include light clerical work and more.
